2013 was a big year for me, I finally had a moment (the first in 5 years) where my boobs weren’t lactating, diapers didn’t need changing, my children were in the big leagues (kindergarten and nursery) and “mommy and me” had totally become- been there done that status!  What’s a former fashion lover/fashion stylist, turned mom suppose to do with a few extra hours on her hands!? Start a fashion blog of course! Hence- Dara Michelle Style was born.  I started to write and couldn’t stop. Ultimately the blog became very therapeutic for me, a place where I could be creative, feel inspired and hopefully inspire others. My goal:  To make the world a better place one fashion moment at a time.  Not to say some Chanel could solve all of the world’s problems (although I know a few people that would beg to differ) but it could, at the very least, make you smile more which in turn will make someone else smile which in turn will make you feel happy which in turn will make them feel happy which it turn will make the world overall happier…. See where I’m going with this!!!  Ok, ok I’m totally getting off topic here…

I thought a great way to say good-bye to 2013 and hello to 2014 is to take a look back at my 5 favorite blogging moments.  (Check them out below.)  I also just wanted to take a minute to thank everyone for their love and support and for taking the time to read my blog it truly means so much and I am eternally grateful.  Here’s to an amazing 2014 wishing you and yours a year full of health, happiness, love, and of course some kick-ass major shoes!!!

1. It’s All About Family

image

I must confess that although I was always a lover of fashion and my earliest childhood memories all include playing dress-up or have some fashion component to them when I became a mother myself for the first time, I gave up fashion for motherhood basically wearing pajamas for the first three months of my daughter’s life and maybe shaving my legs once. As I got out behind the haze of bottles, diapers, and sleepless nights I started to feel like myself again and it all began with a purchase of a new dress and some Jimmy Choos for our first official date night (baby not included). From that moment I was back!!!  Click to continue reading.

2. A Slutty Halloween

(This post was published in worldredeye.com).

Halloween red eye 2

Over the years, Halloween costumes for women have become progressively more provocative. Even your “G-rated” Sponge Bob has been completely sluttified and now comes with a side of thigh highs.  Nowadays it seems like there aren’t even any other options and frankly, that’s just how some of us like it!!! Most women want a free pass to explore their naughty side. Halloween is a day for just that; women can wear a short skirt for no other reason than because that’s just how it came out of the package … Click here for the rest of the story and for more sexy photos featured on worldredeye.com

3. A Yogi’s Take On Fashion

nbc 6 frame shot

So I was enjoying my soy latte (my drink of choice because the soy milk is naturally sweet therefore no yucky chemicals or artificial sweeteners are needed) waiting for my yoga class to begin when my yoga teacherJavier Wilensky sat down and joined me.  Since we had some time before class and my laptop was up and running (obviously), what’s a fashion blogger to do but show their yoga teacher their latest NBC segment on closet revamping!!!  What happened next???  Click to continue reading.

4. Jerry Garcia and Karl Lagerfeld are My Homeboys

image

So I’ve always had this connection to my inner hippie wanting to put a halo of daisies in my hair, talk about love, and of course rock some tie-dye while jamming out to The Grateful Dead. But, I’ve also had the same connection to Chanel, Hermes, and Louis Vuitton. What’s a girl to do with an inner conflict such as this!? I’d often wonder, “Would my Louboutins feel welcomed at a Janis Joplin cover band show!?  Click to continue reading.

5. Once Upon A Time At Nordstrom

image

It was last week when I had a major shopping emergency. I was supposed to attend a luncheon for the Young Society Of Hope and Love for the Diabetes Research Institute the following day at the St. Regis in Bal Harbor. The theme was “Haute Tea.” Which meant a plethora of your finest teas, oodles of little tea sandwiches, overflowing beautiful blooms, gorgeous china and linens, and of course a fabulous hat which, I hadn’t gotten a chance to get. What’s a mom to do with only an hour before dinner, bath, and bed? Well, take the girls and get my shop on immediately, of course!!!  Click to continue reading.

I have to thank my girls for always reminding me that life is a gift and to enjoy each moment. And of course there’s always time for a fashion show!!!  Click below to watch!

Has your closet become an endless sea of black, white, and gray?  With today’s crazy schedule of carpools, taking your little ones to gymnastics, soccer practice, a play-date, etc. who has time for color?!  It’s all about getting dressed in a hurry and if your alarm (by alarm I mean a certain adorable 6-year-old that wakes you up at the glorious hour (not) of 6am ready for the day) you barely open your eyes before you have to throw something on.  What’s a girl to do besides grab your basic neutrals? I totally get it (I’m a little guilty of this too) but there is a way to break up the monotony of our closets- and that is with the statement shoe!  Picture your basic jeans and white t-shirt with hot pink stilettos or black skinny jeans with a black tank and funky leopard shoesThe statement shoe is all you need for a little wardrobe pick-me-up!!! On a personal note, is it weird that hot designer shoes always makes me feel 10 years younger? Since my little princesses often give me tired circles under my eyes these days I’ll take all the help I can get (including paying a ridiculous amount of money for eye cream from the lady at the La Mer beauty counter promising it will change my life… I’ll let you know when that happens)! Check out my favorite statement shoes below! With all the amazing designer shoes sales going on I highly recommend you picking up a few major ones stat!!! Happy shopping!

Each week I look forward to date-night with my husband!  Something else I look forward to each week … getting ready for date-night (obviously)!!! In college, my roommates and I use to say we would have more fun getting ready to go out than actually being out! Today I wouldn’t go that far, but I do enjoy the hour I get all to myself!  Who knew spending twenty minutes applying make-up could be so invigorating!!! I guess when you’re use to hearing the word “mommy” 20 times in 20 minutes putting on mascara alone in a quiet bathroom can feel like a mini vacation to St. Barth’s!!!

As far as make-up goes I always go a little more dramatic at night swapping my daytime neutrals for deep browns/black.  My go-to date-night look is typically a smokey eye but, this season, I’ve added a new favorite to my list: The sexy cat-eye! The cat-eye has been around since the 1950’s and has been rocked by the world’s most glamorous women- from Marilyn Monroe to Angelina Jolie. The moment my eyes begin to take on their feline shape I immediately start to feel sexy!  These days anything that can make me feel more like a sex kitten and less like a mommy who just wiped a poopie butt (even though this happens to be a very cute butt) I’ll take!  Now where was I …. !?  Oh yeah, I was at sex kitten!!!

If a little sexy update is just what you need try the cat-eye it’s sure to release your inner goddess!  If the liner is making you feel a little overwhelmed don’t fret!  With just a little practice you will soon master the technique and, before you know it, will be able to get your cat-eye on faster than you can say, “Put the worm down”!!! (Yes my little princess loves to play with worms)! Check out my favorite cat-eye looks below and a little YouTube tutorial to help you purrr-fect your look!!!

Later sex kitten!

My #ootd (outfit of the day):

More from Torn by Ronny Kobo!

Fresh from the Torn event at MVM Miami and I’m still not over it, clearly. One of my favorites-  this black and white geometric knit dress!  The detail at the waist made this little number so flattering on that it totally had me forget about those 2 times I gained 40+ pounds from pregnancy  (all worth it but, on the same note, not so cute).  It’s also a refreshing take on the classic LBD (little black dress), which I am always in search of.  Easy (check), flattering (check-check), comfortable (check-check-check) – I recommend everyone grabbing this one!!!

I paired the dress with two amazing vintage lucite bangles from C Madeline’s!

I completed the look with Chanel booties and handbag.

If you’re like me, than one of your favorite things to do is wear fancy jewels (obviously).  Lucky for us jewel obsessed girls, we no longer have to wait for a fab party to do so.  Now all it takes is brunch with the kiddies to think: “What kind of glamorous baubles should I rock today?”  (Well at least that’s what goes on in my head)!  Who would have thought the unlikely combination of major jewelry and cheerios could be so chic!  Check out how I wore the same jewels for a fancy evening event and then, wore the same pieces for brunch with the fam the following day (how scandalous)!!!

The event:  An Art Basel party celebrating the work of Kenny Scharf followed by dinner at Prime 112 (one of my faves).

What I Wore
Dress: French Connection
Shoes: YSL tribute
Clutch: Lauren Merkin
Jewels: necklace and earrings by J. Crew
Cuff: C Madeleine’s (it’s a necklace but made it into a bracelet by wrapping it around my wrist).

The event: Brunch with the fam followed by walking through the tents of Art Miami in Wynwood.

What I wore
Jeans: Rag & Bone
Top: Lola
Shoes: Steve Madden
Jewels: necklace and earrings by J. Crew

The result- ah-mazing!!! Whoever said casual-wear couldn’t be glamorous was clearly mistaken.  Once you rock some major jewels with your denim you’ll never want to stop.  I’m no John Lennon but besides love I think we can add statement jewelry to his “all you need is” list.

In this midst of Art Basel I find myself shopping, obviously!!! My “go-to” –  MVM Miami located in the heart of Wynwood: The mecca of Art Basel and walking distance from the Art Miami tents. I luckily find a spot right on the street (crazy right!?) and before I take a step in my brand new hot pink suede Sergio Rossi shoes (Chanukah present from the hubby), I bump into a graffiti artist named Noah who happens to be working in the same color palette as I’m wearing!  Naturally, we decide to throw his “boy” my camera and turn his “not yet titled” masterpiece into the backdrop for an impromptu photo-shoot!  I quickly thanked the boys and continued on my way until I found yet another group of graffiti artists working on a huge mural that was just- breathtaking. Unfortunately no photo-shoot this time, but I did get to take some “quickies” with my phone and a little ig (instagram) video.  Check it out @daramichellestyle.

Finally, I arrived at the MVM boutique, which was having an exclusive Torn by Ronny Kobo event in honor of Art Basel.  It seemed likely that this designer would be featured at this moment.  Ronny Kobo’s eye for color and details would make even Picasso turn his head. As a whole, the collection is timeless and captivating with upbeat elements in the intricate details, original prints and the finest of fabrics.  And if you don’t believe ask Rhianna, Megan Fox, or Kim Kardashian who have all rocked this label!!! Among my favorites were an aztec-esque printed crop top and matching flair skirt, a black and white geometric dress, and a knit top that I wore for the event. I loved taking this luxurious black and white peplum knit top and pairing it with distressed denim. Inspired by all the color from Art Basel, I chose to create a “pop” to my otherwise neutral palette of black/white/denim with hot pink pumps and a matching clutch by Sergio Rossi.  I completed the look with hot pink lipstick by MAC makeup called “Candy Yum-Yum” .

The event was so fun, the clothes ah-mazing, and the neighborhood beyond inspiring- what more could a fashionista want during Art Basel!!! Extra bonus: I got to hang with my girl and owner of MVM Miami, Melissa Mosheim. This girl is so sweet and has a killer eye for all things fashion.  If you are in the hood for Basel, make sure to check out this gem and don’t be surprised if you run into a couple of street artists and take part in a few impromptu photo-shoots along the way!!! The only thing better than shopping in this store is walking to it! Hope you enjoy the pics below!
