Check out how James King rocked Bulgari’s Serpenti necklace for the 2012 Met Gala!  By wearing this statement piece backwards, she created a layered choker look from the front while accentuating her toned back with the tail of the serpent in a backless gown.  Fast-forward to the 2013 Cannes Film Festival and Jessica Biel rocks her Serpenti frontward, accentuating her bust line.  Her Serpenti also has emeralds, which add a touch of color and bring out the green in her eyes.  Frontwards, backwards, any way you cut it this necklace is OMG AMAZING!!!

Don’t be afraid to try this at home!!!  Go through your old jewelry and see if you can make these pieces new again by wearing them in a different way.  Try putting them backwards if they were once worn frontwards, layering them, or styling them in an unexpected way!  You will be surprised at how these once considered old pieces become your new favs!!! Send me pictures so I can see what you’ve created.  Have fun fashionistas!!!

Although I just stepped out of an hour and 15 minute yoga class with a sense of serene, blissfulness coming over me I’m quickly brought back down to earth (and not in a good way) when I start thinking about the fashion from Sunday night’s Billboard Awards.  I have to say I was a little disappointed.  Although I do appreciate Taylor Swift’s efforts in a cobalt blue sequin number and Selena Gomez’s futuristic Versace, unfortunately, both looks just did not do it for me.  Now I am the first person to get excited over trends and outside-the-box fashion but the key to making it work, is making it your own; experimenting with the trends while still staying true to yourself.  This was not the case with these girls who looked like they were just trying too hard.  (Fashion aside you girls do rock)!!!

That being said I did happened to find one singer who’s look gave me a sign of relief and helped me get back into my Zen like state.  That is Kimberly Perry from The Band Perry. Sporting a two-piece lace and beaded bodice with a pearl-colored satin bottom Kimberly looked exquisite in Mark Zunino.  The sheer parts of the bodice complimented the more conservative skirt displaying the perfect combination of sexy and classy, a difficult combination to achieve. An extra fashion bonus (like sprinkles on your already delicious ice-cream) this songstress quickly metamorphosized into a Stevie Nicks-esque fringe black mini dress to perform her hit single Better Dig Two!!! While spring makeup typically includes lots of color, this season it’s all about pastels.  Now before you start having flashbacks of your five-year-old self going wild in mommy’s makeup draw with your look inspired by Barbie—STOP!!!  These hues, if applied correctly, can make your skin look radiant highlighting your best features in a soft glow.  Think ballet slipper pink lipstick, petal pink blush, and even lavender and minty green eyeshadows.  Still not sure, check out my favorite pastel looks and see if they do the trick!!!

This season the trend of pastels isn’t just reserved for your clothes. We are also seeing this trend for your hair too.  No need to adjust your monitor, you were right, I said HAIR!!! Now we can add pastel highlights to our locks in a non-committal way using hair chalk. So for your next party or event try adding some cotton-candy pink or lavender tones to your tresses!!! Oh wait you have a meeting with your child’s teacher the next day??? Don’t fret, these highlights wash right out in seconds!! Who said you couldn’t be both rock star and super mom at the same time!!!

“Simply beautiful pastel colors, Splat Hair Chalk is a beautiful way to add pastel color highlights to your hair. The chalk slides on dry and instantly adds just the right touch of color.”  Click here to see just how easy the application is!

Pastels are popping up everywhere this spring and if you think I’m referring to the pale, sweet cliché well think again!!!  This season’s pastels have an edge and give a huge color punch to any ensemble.  Think mint green, robin’s-egg blue, and cotton-candy pink on steroids!!!  We are also seeing these edgy hues being implemented into makeupnail polish, accessories, & even hair (ombre with pink ends anyone??? I die!!!)  So even if you have a special tiara wearing little princess in your life, this season it looks like women of all ages can join the princess party!!!

And the award for best dressed at the 2013 Costume Institute Gala goes to…

OLIVIA WILDE

This year’s theme was “Punk: Chaos to Couture” and us fashion obsessed peeps had all the eye candy in the world as designers pushed the envelopes in their avant-garde ensembles!!!  Who’s look stood out among the splendor: Olivia Wilde in Calvin Klein!  Wilde wore a Calvin Klein Collection custom ivory matte satin bandeau dress with black pleats and just enough tummy exposed to keep us dying for more (sorry boys she’s engaged)!!! Love how Wilde rocked the crop top trend 2013 style and did so perfectly!!!  Check out last weeks post “Crop It Like It’s Hot” for more on this trend!  Looks like Calvin Klein and I are on the same page!!!

If you are like me a typical down on the floor and get dirty type of mom, then your “mommy uniform” (assuming it’s post workout and you have showered and therefore removed the latest lulu ensemble from your body) is probably a t-shirt and jeans.  Now although your jeans may be designer and your t-shirt a Splendid made out of the yummiest cotton blend ever it still, in the end, is just a t-shirt and jeans.  The trick to making this daily uniform into a fashion statement, in one word, is ACCESSORIES!!!  A t-shirt and jeans actually can be a great canvas to showcase your favorite accompaniments!!!   A few key pieces like a fitted blazer, chunky necklace, and some fab arm candy is all you need!!!  Extra bonus: Playtime with your kiddies will be equally fun because you will still be as comfortable just a little more chic!!!  Check out these über stylish jeans and t-shirt looks below for some inspiration!!  And remember happy mommy happy baby happy family so take an extra five seconds to accessorize!!!  You deserve it!!!

An Interview with Lori Zaslow
co-founder of Project Soulmate
 and star of
Bravo’s hit series The Love Broker

image

Before we start harmonizing with Bey, “if you liked it, then you shoulda put a ring on it” IT all begins with a first date!  As we get ready for our first date, one of our biggest dilemmas is what to wear??  I wanted to bring you the best advice for this most important question and thought hands down the best person to ask would be Lori Zaslow co-founder (her partner Jenn Zucher is her childhood bestie from camp, love it!!!) of Project Soulmate, a New York-based boutique matchmaking service for upscale singles and the star of Bravo’s hit docu-series the Love Broker.  Lori Zaslow has one mission: Finding her clients true love, one date at a time!  Check out my interview with the über chic matchmaker on what to wear date number one!!!

What is it about matchmaking that you love?
I love love! Both Jennifer and I are very much in love with our husbands and are passionate about the importance of finding the right person. What we’ve learned from our own experiences and from our clients have been crucial to guide them in the ways of love.

What is one fashion rule to never break when out on a first date?
Look sexy not slutty. Never expose too much cleavage because you want to leave something to be desired!

The truth, do women dress for men or other women?
I would say 70/30 women dress for women.  I have found that women in relationships dress for women but should dress for their man.  Single women mostly dress for men!

What are men’s favorite looks?
It really depends on the guy however, I can say that no guy likes a skinny, skinny woman. Real men love curves!!!  In all my years of working as a matchmaker I’ve never had a guy be like, “Yah I’m dying for a skinny, flat chested girl,” Never!!!!

How should one dress for a first date?
Always choose something that you feel good in.  You should look sexy not slutty, be comfortable, and most importantly smell good!

What did you wear on your first date with your husband?
I wore skinny jeans and cute shoes, the epitome of casual and sexy.

What does he remember about it?
Interestingly he remembers my manicure.  He always said he loved that I was well groomed!!!  He also remembers a cool necklace that I had on.

What’s the most important dating advice you can give to anyone who is looking for love?
Be positive and be present and smell fuc&%^* good.  If you don’t smell good who cares about what you’re wearing!  I recently set up this client with a really hot guy and when she came back to discuss she told me he smelled like mothballs!!!!! Now, what can I do with that???

Lessons of the day:
*I apologize Christian Louboutin, but comfort is a must!!! So leave your 160mm Louboutins home (well at least for date number one)!!!
*Remember to DRESS sexy for your HUSBAND.  On date night choose something that your hubby will love to see you in (keep in mind this may differ from what’s hot off the runways and the trendiest at the moment).  What’s most important is that your hubby will barely be able to keep his hands off of you!!  You can go back to your stylish, fashion forward, hotter than Vogue self the following day! Promise!!!
*NEVER leave home without deodorant and fancy perfume!  My favorite an oldie but a goodie: Quelques Fleurs
*Be positive and present!  Earmuffs: Put the fuc$%^ing phone down!!!!
*Most importantly, make sure you feel good in what you’re wearing so you can ROCK it!!!
